EXPANDED GLASS GRANULATE

Lightweight. Inert. Engineered for Performance.

Tech Silica is proud to offer Expanded Glass Granulate through our exclusive distribution partnership with Glasphera, a leading producer of expanded glass products. This isn’t just another aggregate. It’s a closed-cell, 100% recycled-content material that opens the door to lighter, stronger, and more sustainable concrete systems.

WHAT IS EXPANDED GLASS GRANULATE?

Expanded glass granulate is produced by taking a silica flour base, forming it into a raw ‘green grain’ through a wet process, then drying and expanding it in a rotary kiln. The result is a lightweight, closed-cell silicon dioxide particle – inert, dimensionally stable, and built for construction applications that demand performance without excess weight.

It is not foam glass. While both share a similar silica base, expanded glass uses a fundamentally different kiln process that gives it tighter particle size control and superior workability characteristics.

TECHNICAL PROPERTIES

Available in five distinct grain sizes, expanded glass granulate serves a wide range of construction applications:

Super sacks available for larger operations

APPLICATIONS & BENEFITS

Concrete & CMU Block Manufacturing

Replace up to 25% of sand by volume to reduce unit weight with minimal compressive strength impact. Rounded particles improve workability and cut mixing time in dry mortar, tile adhesive, and grout systems.

Lightweight Concrete for Elevated Decks

Helps producers meet ASTM C330 unit weight requirements while hitting target PSI — with the flexibility to use recycled materials as performance specs increasingly focus on results.

GFRC & Precast Concrete

Reduces component weight in GFRC and precast applications, translating to real shipping savings — more pallets per truck, lower freight cost, and easier job site handling.

UHPC

Acts as an internal curing agent in ultra-high performance concrete, managing water retention and controlling early-age cracking in low w/cm mixes.

Refractory & Industrial

High-temperature stability and chemical inertness make it suitable for refractory systems and specialty industrial mixes requiring lightweight fill and low thermal conductivity.

Fire Suppression

Effective for suppressing lithium-ion battery and other Class D fires. Glasphera testing has established encapsulation depths of two to six inches, a growing spec area as EV infrastructure, data centers, and battery storage facilities expand.

WHY CONSIDER EXPANDED GLASS GRANULATE OVER TRADITIONAL SAND?

Traditional aggregate extraction is resource-intensive — roughly 250 gallons of water are consumed per ton of processed material, and that environmental impact is rarely captured in EPDs. Expanded glass diverts waste from landfills and reduces dependence on natural aggregate extraction.

Beyond sustainability, there are practical performance and logistics advantages:

Lower unit weight means more yield per bag and more pallets per truck

Improved workability in mortar and tile adhesive systems

No capillary action due to closed-cell structure

No capillary action due to closed-cell structure

100% recycled content for green building compliance

Fire suppression capability in relevant applications
