WHAT IS SILICA FUME?
Silica fume is an effective supplementary cementitious material (SCM) – an ultra-fine amorphous powder composed of spherical silicon dioxide particles measuring 0.1-0.3 microns in diameter (about 100 times smaller than a cement particle).
This material is produced through two primary processes:
Zircon Fusion
Our zircon-based silica fume is a byproduct of zircon sand processing in electric arc furnaces, where SiO gas oxidizes and condenses into microscopic particles.
Silicon/Ferrosilicon Production
Our silicon-based silica fume is captured during the production of silicon metal and ferrosilicon alloys.
In both processes, the SiO₂ formed is captured through advanced filtration systems.
The properties of silica fume deliver several performance advantages:
Fine Particle Size
With particles averaging 0.1-0.3 microns and specific surface areas of 15,000-30,000 m²/kg, silica fume fills microscopic voids between cement particles.
Strong Pozzolanic Reactivity:
Containing 85-98% amorphous silicon dioxide, silica fume reacts with calcium hydroxide to form additional cementitious compounds that strengthen the material matrix.
Spherical Particle Shape:
The round particles enhance flowability and workability in various applications.
Available in a spectrum of colors from white (exclusive to certain zircon-based grades) to light gray and dark charcoal depending on carbon content and source material, silica fume substantially improves performance in numerous applications.
